Top 10 Family Activities in Lagos

Lagos is a brilliant place for a family holiday, with plenty to keep every age happy — from a local zoo and hands-on science centre to water parks, boat trips and gentle beaches. Here are ten family activities in and around Lagos.

Lagos is a brilliant base for a family holiday. Within easy reach you'll find a leafy local zoo, a hands-on science centre, treetop adventure courses, some of the Algarve's biggest water parks, and gentle beaches and boat trips that little ones love. Here are ten family activities in and around Lagos, with something for every age.

1. Zoo de Lagos

Just outside town near Barão de São João, the Zoo de Lagos is a compact, leafy zoo that's perfect for younger children. It's home to monkeys, colourful birds, flamingos, reptiles and a farm area where kids can help feed the animals. Well shaded and easy to walk in a couple of hours — even with a buggy — it makes for a relaxed, rewarding morning out.

2. Centro Ciência Viva de Lagos

Right in the heart of Lagos, this hands-on science centre is built for curious kids. A "please touch" policy lets little ones explore the interactive exhibits freely, there's an outdoor garden and play area to burn off energy, and a rooftop café with harbour views for the grown-ups. Educational, fun and a great rainy-day option too.

3. Parque Aventura Lagos

For active families, this treetop adventure park sets out a series of rope courses and ziplines among the trees, with different levels of difficulty — including gentle courses suitable for children as young as four. Safe, well run and genuinely fun for parents and older kids too, it's a great way to spend an energetic couple of hours.

4. Parque Aquático (Slide & Splash)

A water park is a holiday highlight for most kids, and Slide & Splash near Lagoa (about 30 minutes east) is one of the Algarve's biggest, with slides for every age and a dedicated toddler play area. Picnic lawns, shade and plenty of lifeguards make for an easy full day. Aqualand, near Alcantarilha, is another good option a little further east.

5. Zoomarine

About 50 minutes east near Albufeira, Zoomarine is a full-day marine theme park that's a guaranteed hit. Expect dolphin, sea lion and bird shows, a 4D cinema, swimming pools and water slides, and animals from turtles to tropical fish. There's enough here for a packed day out — arrive at opening to fit it all in.

6. Observação de Golfinhos (Dolphin Watching)

Heading out into the Atlantic to spot wild dolphins is a thrill for the whole family. Boat trips from Lagos marina regularly find pods of common, bottlenose and striped dolphins, with responsible operators keeping a respectful distance. Trips are usually short enough for younger attention spans, and the excitement when the dolphins appear is hard to beat. Read our dolphin watching guide.

7. Passeio de Barco às Grutas (Ponta da Piedade)

A gentle boat trip among the cliffs, arches and caves of Ponta da Piedade is pure magic for children — the little boats nose right into the grottoes, and there's always something to point at. It's calm, short and suitable for all ages, and one of the most memorable things you can do in Lagos. Compare the best boat tours in Lagos.

8. Praias de Família (Family Beaches)

Some Lagos beaches are especially easy with children. Meia Praia offers a long, flat stretch of sand and calm, shallow water with plenty of room to play, while Praia da Batata is a short walk from the old town and sheltered by cliffs. Both have beach bars close by for snacks and shade. More on Meia Praia.

9. Passadiços de Alvor

An easy, flat walk that works for the whole family: the wooden boardwalk through the Ria de Alvor wetlands, just east of Lagos. It's stroller- and toddler-friendly, full of birds to spot, and short enough not to wear little legs out. A peaceful change of pace — and free.

10. Explorar a Lagos Antiga (Exploring the Old Town)

Lagos itself is a fun, walkable adventure for families. Explore the little Ponta da Bandeira fort by the marina, wander the cobbled streets and squares, watch the boats come and go, and reward everyone with an ice cream along the way. Easy, free and full of small discoveries — the perfect low-key day.
