Lagos has one of the driest, sunniest climates in Portugal, but annual averages tell you little when you are choosing which week to book. This page shows what actually happens month by month — and the forecast for the days ahead.

The «rain per day» column is the average time it rains each day, in hours — not the amount of water. «Wind gets up» is the average hour the wind starts to pick up.
What these numbers are
These are not averages copied from an almanac. They are our own readings, collected hour by hour since February 2024 for the town of Lagos and summarised day by day. Every month on this page rests on 60 to 93 measured days, across two or three years.
That carries an important caveat: this is a few years of data, not thirty-year climate normals. It answers «what is October usually like» very well. It cannot tell you anything about climate trends.
Summer is effectively rainless
This is the figure that surprises most visitors: between June and August the average is under fifteen minutes of rain a day. It is not that there is less rain than in northern Europe — there is essentially none. May still averages an hour a day, and by October it climbs to two and a half.
If you want heat with a wide margin against rain, May to September is a long window. If swimming is not the point, April and October give you mild days and far fewer people.
August is hotter than July
Contrary to what most people assume, July is not the warmest month. August has the higher average maximum and, more noticeably, the warmer nights — about a degree above July. If you are sleeping without air conditioning, that difference matters more than the daytime figure.
The wind is part of the landscape
Lagos is breezy all year round. That is a feature of this coast, not a fault of the summer. What changes with the seasons is not so much the strength as the hour the wind gets up. In winter it is already blowing before dawn; in August it usually waits until mid-morning.
Hence the rule any local will give you: if the plan involves a calm sea — the beach, a boat trip to the grottoes, paddleboarding — go in the morning. Afternoons tend to be choppier, especially on the west-facing beaches.
The Algarve sun burns faster than it feels
With a constant breeze, the heat deceives. The UV index reaches 9 in July — very high — and stays above 6 from April to September. Sunburn in Lagos tends to happen on windy days, not on the still ones.
Frequently asked questions
Does it rain in Lagos in August?
Almost never. In our measurements August averages around twelve minutes of rain a day. June and July are just as dry. Real rain falls between November and March.
When is the best time to visit Lagos?
It depends what you want. For heat and swimming, June to September. For good weather with fewer people and lower prices, May and October are the best bets: October still averages highs of 22°C.
Is Lagos windy?
It is breezy all year, averaging 14 to 18 km/h, and that is part of the character of this coast. The useful figure is not the average but the hour: the wind usually gets up mid-morning in summer and before dawn in winter. Mornings are almost always calmer.
Can you go to the beach in October?
You can, and it is one of the most pleasant months if you dislike crowds. Highs average around 22°C and the sea still holds the summer warmth. Bring a jacket for the evening.
