Meia Praia: 4 km of Sand — Where to Go and What to Avoid
If the cliff coves south of town are Lagos at its most dramatic, Meia Praia is Lagos at its most easygoing: a vast, flat, golden arc of sand running about four kilometres from the marina out towards Alvor. There's room for everyone here, even in August — which is exactly why locals love it. Here's how to make the most of its length, because where you set up on Meia Praia changes the whole day.

Why Meia Praia is different
Forget staircases and crowded coves. Meia Praia is open, gently shelving and enormous, backed by dunes rather than cliffs. That means easy access, space to breathe, room for a long walk or run by the water, and gentler conditions for paddling and swimming. It's the practical, relaxed counterpoint to postcard beaches like Dona Ana. Compare with Dona Ana →
Where to go along its 4 km
The beach changes character along its length, so pick your spot:
The Lagos (marina) end is closest to town — walkable across the footbridge and a short hop from the centre. Liveliest, with beach bars and the easiest no-car access. Good if you want a swim plus a drink without committing to a drive.
The middle thins out the crowds. Walk five minutes from any access point and you'll find space even on a busy day.
The Alvor end is the quietest and most natural, backed by dunes and the estuary — a longer drive or walk, rewarded with elbow room.
The local move: park or walk in, then stroll a few minutes along the sand away from the access point. The crowds cluster where people arrive; the space is always just a short walk away.
Getting there and parking
On foot: from the centre, cross the marina footbridge and you're at the town end in about 15 minutes.
By car: several access points and car parks along the back of the beach. Parking here is much easier than at the cliff beaches — the large areas absorb the demand, though the closest rows fill in peak season. Parking in Lagos →
By land train / seasonal transport: in summer there are easy ways across to the beach from town — ask us for what's running this season.
Watersports and activities
Meia Praia's size and conditions make it the home of beach activity in Lagos: stand-up paddle, windsurfing, kitesurfing, sailing, waterskiing and catamaran trips all operate from here in season, and the calm marina-side water is good for beginners. It's also where you'll find space for beach games and long swims. More leisure ideas →
Facilities
Several beach bars and restaurants line the beach in season — some open year-round at the town end — along with sunbed and parasol rental and seasonal lifeguard cover at the main access points. Because the beach is so long, facilities cluster at the access points; if you walk far along the sand, carry water and shade.
Local tips
Best for families and a relaxed day. Gentle, shallow entry and space make it the easy choice with kids and gear. Lagos with kids →
Best for a sunset walk. The long flat sand and town-and-cliffs backdrop are gorgeous in the evening light.
It can be breezier than the sheltered coves — great for watersports, occasionally less so for a still sunbathe. A windbreak helps on blustery days.
Quietest stretches are a short walk away from any car park — always.
