Lagos has some of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal — and the secret to a great beach day here is understanding that they come in two very different kinds. Get that right and you'll always end up on the beach that fits your mood, your group and the weather. We live here, so here's how a local reads the coast.

The cliff coves — dramatic and sheltered

South of the town centre, golden cliffs hide a string of small, sheltered coves with turquoise water: Dona Ana, Camilo, Pinhão, Estudantes and their neighbours. These are the postcard beaches — calm, clear water good for swimming and snorkelling, framed by rock formations. For room to breathe, head to the open beaches. Meia Praia is the town's giant — about 4 km of flat golden sand, the easiest for families, parking and watersports. East towards Alvor the beaches stay gentle and uncrowded.

Beyond the centre — quieter and wilder

Timing beats everything in summer. Even the busiest coves are peaceful before 10:00 and after 17:00 — swim early or late and skip the midday crush.
