October might be our favourite month in Lagos. The summer crowds have thinned, the sea is still warm from a whole summer of sun, the light turns golden and soft, and the town feels like it belongs to the people who live here again. If you're considering the Algarve's shoulder season, here's exactly what to expect — from people who watch it happen every year.
The weather in October
October is warm and mostly sunny, with a gentle autumnal edge:
Daytime highs: typically around 22–24°C, occasionally higher early in the month.
Nighttime lows: around 15°C — pleasant, but you'll want a layer for evenings outdoors.
Sunshine: roughly 7 hours a day; sunny afternoons are still the norm.
Rain: around 7 days of rain across the month, usually short showers rather than washouts.
Early October feels like a softer summer; by the end of the month you'll notice the cooler, shorter evenings. If swimming and beach time are your priority, aim for the first half.
Can you swim in October?
Yes — and this is October's secret. The sea sits around 19–20°C, having stored the summer's heat, which is often warmer than the Atlantic feels in early summer. It's refreshing rather than bathwater-warm, very swimmable for most people, especially in the first weeks. Bring a wetsuit only if you feel the cold easily or plan long sessions in the water.
The crowds (or lack of them)
This is the big draw. July and August pack the beaches, restaurants and Benagil; by October the difference is dramatic. Beaches have space, restaurants take walk-ins, the boat trips aren't booked solid, and Ponta da Piedade is photographable without a queue. Popular spots can still feel lively on warm weekends, but nothing like peak season. You get the Algarve at its best with room to enjoy it.
What's open in October?
Lagos is a real, year-round town — not a resort that shuts down — so the answer is most things. The old town's restaurants, cafés and bars are open, the boat operators still run (weather permitting), and the shops are trading. What changes: some purely seasonal beach bars and a few summer-only operations begin to wind down through the month, and boat-trip schedules thin out and become more weather-dependent. If a specific tour matters to you, book ahead rather than assuming daily departures. Browse activities →
What to pack
Beachwear and sunscreen — it's still beach weather, and the October sun still burns.
Light layers and a jacket or jumper for the evenings.
A light rain layer or compact umbrella for the occasional shower.
Comfortable shoes for the old town's cobbles and the clifftop paths.
The honest local pitch: you get summer's sea and most of its sunshine, autumn's golden light and dramatic sunsets, none of summer's crush, and lower prices on flights and accommodation. For a first trip or a returning one, it's hard to beat. How many days to stay →
