How Many Days in Lagos? Itineraries for 1 to 4 Days
This is one of the most common questions we get, and the honest local answer is: three to four days is the sweet spot for Lagos. One or two days will show you the highlights; three lets you slow down and reach the best beaches and a boat trip without rushing; four opens the door to day trips along the rest of the western Algarve. Here's how we'd structure each, based on what we'd actually do.

1 day in Lagos — the highlights
If Lagos is a day stop, focus on the two things it does better than anywhere: the old town and Ponta da Piedade.
Morning: wander the historic centre — the city walls, Praça Gil Eanes, the church of Santo António, the old slave market building, and the lanes of cafés and shops. Coffee on a square.
Late morning: a grotto boat trip from the marina, or walk the cliffs to Ponta da Piedade and down the staircase. Ponta da Piedade guide →
Beach + relax trip: 3–4 days minimum; many happily spend a week using Lagos as a base.
Algarve road trip, Lagos as one stop: 2 days captures the essentials.
Cruise or day visit: 1 focused day on the old town and Ponta da Piedade.
Our bias, as people who live here: stay longer than you think you need. Lagos is a base, not a tick-box — the best days are the unplanned ones.
Frequently asked questions
How many days do you need in Lagos, Portugal?
Three to four days is ideal — enough for the old town, the main beaches, a boat trip and time to relax. One or two days covers the highlights; a week makes a great beach base.
Is one day in Lagos enough?
For the headline sights, yes: the old town plus Ponta da Piedade and one beach fill a good day. But most visitors wish they'd stayed longer.
Is Lagos a good base for exploring the Algarve?
Excellent. It has the beaches, restaurants and nightlife, plus easy access to Sagres, the west coast and Silves on day trips.
What's the best time of year to visit Lagos?
May, June, September and early October balance warm weather with manageable crowds. July–August are hottest and busiest; winter is quiet and mild.
Do I need a car for a Lagos trip?
Not for the town and its beaches, which are walkable. A car (or tours) helps only if you want day trips beyond Lagos.
