Ponta da Piedade: Boat, Kayak or On Foot? Complete Local Guide

If Lagos has one postcard, it's Ponta da Piedade: a headland of golden cliffs, sea arches and rock pillars rising from impossibly turquoise water, just south of the town centre. It's also the most common question we get from visitors — should I see it by boat, by kayak, or on foot? The honest answer is that they're three different experiences of the same place, and the best choice depends on your time, budget and mobility. Here's how each one works.

On foot — free, and more spectacular than people expect

Ponta da Piedade sits about 2.5 km south of the centre of Lagos. You can walk there along the clifftops in 25–30 minutes (the route passes above Praia da Batata, Dona Ana and Camilo — itself worth the trip), or drive in five minutes to the free parking by the lighthouse.

From the top, a network of wooden boardwalks runs along the cliff edge with viewpoints over the pillars and arches — flat, safe, and suitable for almost everyone, including pushchairs on most stretches. Then there's the famous staircase: roughly 180 steps zigzagging down the cliff face to a small landing at sea level, right among the rock formations. Going down is easy; coming back up in August heat is a workout — carry water and take it slowly.

The clifftop is also, in our opinion, the best sunset spot in Lagos. The light turns the rocks copper and the crowds thin out after the tour boats stop. If you do only one free thing in Lagos, do this.

By boat — inside the grottos

What you can't see from the top are the grottos: caves and tunnels carved into the base of the cliffs, only reachable from the water. Small traditional boats weave between the pillars and slip into caves that bigger vessels can't enter, with skippers who've named every rock ("the elephant", "the kitchen"...) and know exactly where the light falls.

Trips leave from two places: Lagos Marina / Avenida waterfront (a longer ride along the coast first) and the bottom of the Ponta da Piedade staircase itself (straight into the formations). Tours typically last 30 minutes to an hour for the grotto circuit. Morning light reaches deepest into the caves; the sea is also usually calmest then.

By kayak or SUP — the most fun you'll have in the water

Guided kayak and stand-up paddle tours leave from the town beaches and the Marina, paddling along the coast and through the arches of Ponta da Piedade — passing under rock bridges, into open-roofed caves, and usually stopping at a small beach only reachable from the water for a swim. Tours run around two hours, no experience needed; doubles are available so children can ride with a parent.

It's more physical than the boat and you will get wet, which in July feels like a feature, not a bug. Book morning slots in summer: calmer water, cooler paddling, and the grottos to yourselves before the day-trip rush.

Which one should you choose?

  • Short on time or money → walk the boardwalk and the staircase. Free, and you'll understand the hype.
  • Want to see the caves with zero effort → grotto boat trip, ideally morning.
  • Active, travelling with teens, or want a swim stop → kayak tour.
  • Doing the Benagil trip anyway? Many Benagil boat tours from Lagos pass Ponta da Piedade on the way — but they don't linger in the grottos the way the small local boats do. If the grottos matter to you, do them separately. Compare with our Benagil guide →

Our local move, when friends visit: kayak in the morning, dinner in town, then drive back up for sunset on the cliffs. One landmark, two completely different days.

Practical details

  • Getting there: 25–30 min walk from the centre along the cliffs, or 5 min by car; free parking at the lighthouse (fills late morning in summer).
  • Mobility: boardwalks are mostly flat and accessible; the staircase is not. Boat trips from the Marina avoid stairs entirely.
  • What to bring: water, hat, sunscreen; swimwear and water shoes for kayak tours.
  • Sea conditions: grotto and kayak trips depend on swell — winter cancellations are normal. The clifftop works year-round and winter light is superb.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ponta da Piedade free to visit?

Yes — the clifftop boardwalks and the staircase are free and open all the time. Only the boat and kayak trips cost money.

How many steps does the staircase have?

Around 180, down the cliff face to sea level. Easy down, sweaty up — bring water in summer.

Can you swim at Ponta da Piedade?

There's no real beach at the point itself, but kayak tours stop at small coves for a swim, and Camilo and Dona Ana beaches are right next door.

Boat or kayak — which is better for the grottos?

The small boats get deeper into the narrow caves with zero effort; kayaks are more fun and include swimming. With kids under ~5 or limited mobility, take the boat.

When is the best light?

Morning for inside the grottos; sunset from the clifftops. Photographers should plan both.

Is it worth it if I've already done Benagil?

Yes — they're different things. Benagil is one famous cave; Ponta da Piedade is a labyrinth of pillars and arches, and it's right here in Lagos.
