With dramatic cliffs, sea caves and warm Atlantic water, Lagos is one of the Algarve's best places to get on (or under) the sea. Here are ten water activities to try, from gentle paddles to full-on adventure.
With its dramatic cliffs, hidden sea caves and warm Atlantic water, Lagos is one of the best places on the Algarve to get on — or under — the sea. Whether you want a gentle paddle through the grottoes, a shot of adrenaline off the marina, or a world-class dive, there's something here for every level. These are ten water activities worth trying, and where to do them.
1. Surf
The Algarve's Atlantic coast is a surfing magnet, and Lagos makes a great base to learn. Gentle beach breaks like Meia Praia and Porto de Mós are ideal for first lessons, while the wilder west coast around Sagres and the Costa Vicentina serves up bigger, more consistent waves for the experienced. Schools run lessons and board hire for all levels. Read our guide to learning to surf in Lagos.
2. Stand-Up Paddle (SUP)
Stand-up paddleboarding is the most accessible way onto the water here — easy to pick up and magical along the Lagos coast. Glide across the calm coves at first light, or paddle out around the cliffs and into the sea caves of Ponta da Piedade when the sea is flat. Calm, scenic and suitable for almost anyone, no experience required.
3. Kayak nas Grutas (Sea Kayaking)
If you do one thing on the water in Lagos, make it this: kayaking among the golden cliffs, arches and grottoes of Ponta da Piedade, slipping into caves a bigger boat can't reach. Guided tours leave from the town beaches and need no experience. It's the signature Lagos sea adventure. More on Ponta da Piedade.
4. Coasteering
For the adventurous, coasteering combines scrambling along the rocks, cliff jumping and swimming through caves and gullies — all in a wetsuit and helmet with a guide. It's an exhilarating, hands-on way to experience the Lagos cliffs from the waterline, with jumps to suit nervous first-timers and thrill-seekers alike.
5. Mergulho e Snorkeling (Diving & Snorkelling)
Beneath the surface, the Algarve reveals reefs, rays and shoals of fish in clear, warm water. The star attraction is the Ocean Revival park off Portimão, where four decommissioned navy ships were sunk to create one of Europe's largest artificial reefs — a world-class dive. Snorkelling trips and beginner dives make the underwater world accessible to non-divers too.
6. Passeio de Barco às Grutas (Ponta da Piedade Boat Tour)
The classic Lagos boat trip: a small boat threading through the arches, stacks and caves of Ponta da Piedade, the skipper nosing into grottoes as the light plays on the water. Short and gentle, it's the easiest way to see the cliffs from the sea, and perfect if kayaking isn't your thing. Compare the best boat tours in Lagos.
7. Gruta de Benagil (Benagil Sea Cave)
Further east lies the Algarve's most famous sea cave — a vast, cathedral-like grotto with a round skylight open to the sky, reachable only from the water. Come by boat tour, or paddle in yourself by kayak or SUP for a quieter visit. So popular that access is now regulated, it remains a bucket-list experience. How to visit the Benagil cave.
8. Observação de Golfinhos (Dolphin Watching)
The waters off Lagos are home to dolphins year-round, and boat trips head out into the Atlantic to find them — often common, bottlenose and striped dolphins, with the occasional whale in summer. Responsible operators keep their distance and let the animals choose to approach. A memorable trip, and a favourite with families. Read our dolphin watching guide.
9. Kitesurf & Windsurf
When the wind picks up, the nearby Ria de Alvor lagoon becomes a playground for kitesurfers and windsurfers — flat, shallow water that's ideal for learning, with schools on hand. The open Atlantic beaches offer stronger conditions for the experienced. A great way to make the most of those breezier Algarve afternoons.
10. Jet Ski & Parasailing
For a shot of pure adrenaline, the marina is the launch point for jet ski rides and for parasailing high above the bay, with the Lagos coastline spread out beneath you. Quick, exciting and requiring no skill, they're a fun add-on to a beach day, run by operators right at the marina.
Where to book in Lagos
Most water activities are run by licensed operators from the Lagos marina and town beaches, with no experience needed for the guided ones. For boat trips in particular, it's worth comparing what's on offer — see our honest guide to the best boat tours in Lagos.
