Lagos is made for golden hour. From dramatic clifftop boardwalks to the very edge of Europe, here are ten viewpoints and sunset spots near Lagos — what you'll see at each, and how to reach it.
Lagos is made for golden hour. This stretch of the Algarve is all honey-coloured cliffs, sea arches and big Atlantic skies, and the light at the end of the day turns it to gold. From easy clifftop boardwalks a few minutes from the old town to the legendary edge of Europe an hour west, here are ten viewpoints and sunset spots worth seeking out — and how to reach each one.
1. Ponta da Piedade
The crown jewel of the Lagos coastline — a headland of golden cliffs, sea stacks and hidden grottoes, topped by a small lighthouse. A wooden boardwalk runs along the cliff edge, and a long staircase (around 200 steps) drops to the water, where boat and kayak tours weave through the arches. Come at sunset for the warm light on the rock, but expect company. Read our full Ponta da Piedade guide.
2. Miradouro da Praia do Canavial
The spot locals point you to for sunset. Wide, grassy and far quieter than Ponta da Piedade, it looks out over the open Atlantic with room to spread out on the clifftop. Bring a blanket and arrive a little early — word is getting out, but there's space for everyone to find a ledge.
3. Praia do Camilo
Famous for its long wooden staircase zig-zagging down to a tiny twin-cove beach, Camilo rewards you twice — with sweeping cliff views from the top, and a sheltered swim at the bottom (a short tunnel links the two coves). The climb back up is the price of admission. More on Praia do Camilo.
4. Miradouro da Praia da Dona Ana
Looking down over what many call Lagos' prettiest beach, this viewpoint frames golden cliffs and turquoise water from a clifftop boardwalk. It's quietly spectacular at sunrise, and on clear nights it doubles as a fine stargazing spot. Read our Praia Dona Ana guide.
5. Miradouro Praia da Batata
The easiest viewpoint of all — a short, flat walk from the old town along the seafront brings you here, where rock stacks and caves rise from a small city beach. Perfect if you want a taste of the cliffs without the climb, and an easy place to catch the light at the end of the day.
6. Forte da Ponta da Bandeira
For something different, this compact 17th-century fort guards the entrance to Lagos' marina and river mouth. Walk its walls for an urban-meets-sea perspective, with the old town behind you and the water ahead — a lovely, low-effort place to watch the sun drop over the harbour, with a dose of maritime history thrown in.
7. Rocha Negra (Praia da Luz)
Just west of Lagos, above the village of Luz, a dark volcanic headland known as Rocha Negra rises over the beach. The clifftop path is a rewarding short hike — steep and rocky at first, then opening to panoramic views along the coast. Good shoes help; the payoff is a quieter sunset away from the Lagos crowds.
8. Cabo de São Vicente (Sagres)
The dramatic finale: the southwesternmost point of mainland Europe, where towering cliffs meet the open ocean beside a historic lighthouse. For centuries this was "the end of the world," and it remains the Algarve's most legendary sunset — vast, wild and worth the roughly 40-minute drive from Lagos. Check the forecast; on a clear evening it's unforgettable. See it as a day trip from Lagos.
9. Fortaleza de Sagres
A short hop from the cape, this vast fortress sits on a windswept promontory ringed by cliffs and crashing surf. Walk the ramparts and the headland for raw Atlantic drama and a strong sense of Portugal's seafaring past — it pairs naturally with Cabo de São Vicente for one half-day trip. Bring a jacket; the wind here is real.
10. Miradouro da Fóia (Monchique)
For a complete change of scene, head inland and up: at 902 metres, Fóia is the highest point in the Algarve. On a clear day the panorama stretches across rolling hills all the way to the coastline, with a café and craft stalls at the top. Cooler, greener and a world away from the beaches — a fine reason to drive up through the Monchique mountains.
