Faro Airport to Lagos: Transfer, Train, Bus or Rental Car Compared

Faro Airport is the gateway to the Algarve, but Lagos sits about 85 km to the west — roughly an hour by road. There's no train station at the airport and no metro, so your real options are: private transfer, rental car, taxi or ride-hailing, bus, or train (with a connection). We've done them all, picked friends up dozens of times, and this is the honest comparison.

The quick answer

  • Easiest, door to door: pre-booked private transfer (~1 hour)
  • Cheapest: bus or train (budget €8–17, allow 2–3 hours total)
  • Most freedom during your stay: rental car from the airport
  • Arriving late at night: transfer or taxi — public transport stops in the evening

Option 1 — Private transfer (the one we recommend to most people)

A pre-booked transfer means a driver waiting at arrivals with your name, help with luggage, and a direct ride to your accommodation door in about an hour. For families with children (car seats can be requested), groups of 3–4 splitting the cost, or anyone landing tired, it's the option that removes every unknown. Prices typically run €55–75 per vehicle — split between four people, it costs little more than the bus.

Option 2 — Rental car

If you plan to explore beyond Lagos — Sagres, the west coast beaches, Silves, Monchique — a rental car pays for itself, and picking it up at the airport saves a trip back to Faro later. All major companies operate from the terminal.

The drive west takes about an hour on the A22 motorway (electronic tolls — confirm with the rental company that the car has a toll device and how it's billed) or somewhat longer on the free N125. One honest local warning: parking in Lagos centre in July–August is a sport. If your accommodation has parking, a car is great; if not, weigh it. See our parking guide →

Option 3 — Taxi or Uber/Bolt

Taxis wait outside arrivals around the clock; the metered ride to Lagos costs roughly €85–100, with a surcharge at night (9 pm–6 am). Uber and Bolt operate in the Algarve and usually come in a bit cheaper, though availability at the airport fluctuates with demand — at 1 am in August, expect a wait and surge pricing. For one or two people, a pre-booked transfer is usually the same money with none of the uncertainty.

Option 4 — Bus (the budget option)

Direct buses connect Faro Airport (or Faro bus station) to Lagos, with FlixBus and the seasonal Aerobus service among the operators. Tickets run roughly €8–17 depending on operator and how early you book, and the journey takes about 1.5–2 hours. The catch is frequency: only a handful of departures a day, and the last ones leave in the early evening — if your flight is delayed, your bus doesn't wait. Check current timetables before relying on it, especially outside summer.

Option 5 — Train (cheap, scenic, but with a connection)

The Algarve railway line runs from Faro to Lagos along the coast — a slow, pleasant regional service taking about 1h45, with tickets around €8. The complication: the airport has no station. You first need to reach Faro station by the local number 16 bus (about 20 minutes, a few euros) or a short taxi ride (€10–15). Some trains run direct; others involve a change at Tunes. The last departure is around 20:50, so evening arrivals can't count on it.

It's our favourite option when travelling light and unhurried — the line hugs the coast and arrives at Lagos station, a 10-minute walk across the footbridge from the centre.

Our local recommendation by situation

  • Family with kids or 3–4 people: private transfer. Split the cost, request car seats, done.
  • Couple on a budget, daytime arrival: train (if you enjoy the ride) or direct bus.
  • Planning day trips around the Algarve: rental car from the airport.
  • Landing after 9 pm: pre-booked transfer. Don't gamble on apps or buses at night.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Lagos from Faro Airport?

About 85 km — roughly one hour by car on the A22 motorway.

Is there a direct train from Faro Airport to Lagos?

No. The airport has no train station; you must first reach Faro station by bus or taxi. From there, trains to Lagos take about 1h45, some with a change at Tunes.

How much is a taxi from Faro Airport to Lagos?

Roughly €85–100, more at night. A pre-booked private transfer usually costs less and includes a meet-and-greet at arrivals.

What's the cheapest way to get to Lagos?

The bus or the train, at roughly €8–17 — but allow 2–3 hours total and check the last departure times.

Do I need a car in Lagos?

Not for the town itself — the centre, marina and main beaches are walkable. You'll want one (or day tours) for Sagres, the west coast and the interior.

We land at midnight — what are our options?

Pre-booked transfer or taxi. Public transport has stopped, and ride-hailing availability late at night is unreliable.
