From gentle beginner waves on Lagos's own beaches to the powerful Atlantic breaks of the west coast, this stretch of the Algarve is a surfer's playground. Here are ten of the best surf spots near Lagos, and who each one suits.
This corner of the Algarve is one of Europe's great surfing regions. Around Lagos itself the waves are gentle and beginner-friendly; head west and south to Sagres and the wild Costa Vicentina and you'll find powerful, world-class beach breaks facing every direction of swell. Here are ten of the best surf spots near Lagos, roughly from the easiest to the most demanding, with a note on who each one suits.
1. Meia Praia (Lagos)
The closest spot to town and the gentlest, Meia Praia is the natural place to take your first steps on a board. Its long, open stretch of sand picks up small, mellow waves that are perfect for beginners and longboarders, with plenty of room to spread out and surf schools on hand in summer. An easy, relaxed introduction to surfing, right on Lagos's doorstep.
2. Praia do Porto de Mós (Lagos)
Just west of Lagos, Porto de Mós is a spacious, easy-access beach framed by low cliffs that picks up a bit more swell than Meia Praia. It's a good beach break for improving beginners and intermediates looking to progress, with space to find your own peak. Parking and a couple of restaurants are right by the sand, making for an easy surf session close to town.
3. Praia da Luz (Lagos)
In the seaside village of Luz, a short drive west of Lagos, this sandy beach offers calm, manageable waves over a sandy bottom — another good option for beginners and easy days. The relaxed resort setting means cafés and restaurants are right behind the beach, so you can pair a gentle session with lunch by the sea. A friendly, low-pressure place to surf.
4. Praia da Mareta (Sagres)
Tucked into a sheltered bay at Sagres, Mareta is one of the best spots in the area to learn. Facing south, it's protected from the prevailing north winds and tends to offer gentler, more forgiving waves than the exposed beaches nearby, which is why you'll see so many beginners and surf schools here. A reliable, accessible choice when the west coast is too big.
5. Praia do Beliche (Sagres)
Dramatically set between high cliffs near Cabo de São Vicente, Beliche is a consistent, scenic spot that works across a range of conditions, making it a favourite of surfers and surf schools alike. It picks up plenty of swell but the cliffs offer some shelter from the wind. Access is down a long, steep staircase, so pack light — the reward is one of the most beautiful breaks in the Algarve.
6. Praia do Zavial (Raposeira)
A favourite among those in the know, Zavial is a south-facing beach near Raposeira that's well sheltered from the wind and can serve up a long, quality right-hander when the swell lines up just right. It's a more condition-dependent, fickle spot — best on the right day — and tends to draw a keener, more experienced crowd. There's a good beach restaurant for the wait between sets.
7. Praia do Amado (Carrapateira)
On the wild west coast near Carrapateira, Amado is the Algarve's classic all-round surf beach. Consistent, exposed to plenty of Atlantic swell and with sandbanks that suit all levels, it's a hub of surf camps and schools — buzzing yet big enough never to feel too crowded. With its golden sand and rugged backdrop, it's many people's favourite spot in the region.
8. Praia da Bordeira (Carrapateira)
A short way from Amado, Bordeira is a vast, wild beach where a river meets the Atlantic amid huge dunes. Its sheer size means there's an enormous amount of space and plenty of peaks to choose from, with fun beach-break waves for a range of abilities. Spectacularly scenic and far less crowded than busier spots, it's a wonderful place to surf and simply to be.
9. Praia da Arrifana (Aljezur)
Set in a stunning horseshoe bay backed by tall cliffs near Aljezur, Arrifana is one of the west coast's classic surf spots. The bay offers some shelter, with a beach break that suits intermediates and a more demanding point break off the headland for experienced surfers when it's working. With its clifftop village and sunset views, it's as beautiful as it is fun to surf.
10. Praia da Cordoama (Vila do Bispo)
For raw Atlantic power, head to Cordoama on the west coast near Vila do Bispo. This big, wild, west-facing beach is wide open to the swell, producing strong, hollow waves that are best suited to confident intermediate and advanced surfers. Framed by towering dark cliffs and often gloriously empty, it's a dramatic, exhilarating spot — and the sunsets are unforgettable.
